Who residential treatment may help
Residential care may be appropriate when outpatient efforts have not been sufficient, the home environment is unstable, relapse risk is high, or the person needs distance from routines and cues that reinforce substance use. Level of care must still be determined clinically.
Core components
The proposed program combines individual therapy, group work, recovery planning, psychiatric support when indicated, family involvement, movement, mindfulness and structured daily routines.
Medical safety first
Some substances can produce dangerous withdrawal syndromes. The admissions process must identify when hospital-level or medically supervised withdrawal management is required before residential treatment.
